I had a call this week with the team at Trymbl (who just launched the first “try before you buy” beauty shopping experience). The purpose of the call was to chat about beauty products, but they were also intrigued to find out that I call myself a “professional geek girl.” I found that quite amusing as it’s currently the eve of SXSW – the ultimate Geek Spring Break and I’m currently charging all of the gadgets, attempting to pack and making sure all my proverbial ducks are in a row. This got me thinking, even my evening routine is quite geeky.
1. Sonicare Toothbrush: Let’s start with my toothbrush. Here’s a random fact you might not know about me. At age 20, I had a jaw surgery which resulted in titanium jaws. I wore braces TWICE during that whole adventure. So, as you can imagine, I’m pretty serious about my oral hygiene. I’ve had my Sonicare for 5 or 6 years. I buy the refill brush heads in bulk, and I may or may not have an app that reminds me when to change them out.
2. Waterpik: So, based on my love of the Sonicare, I bet it doesn’t come as a surprise that I jumped at the opportunity to try out the new Waterpik Aquarius Professional Water Flosser. Before receiving this, I remember using a Waterpik while I was a braces wearing high schooler (for time 1 of 2). Post-braces I hadn’t really considered how much of a difference it would make. Let me tell you, I was mistaken! I have a built-in retainer on the inside of my bottom teeth, so flossing is quite annoying. In the world of technological advances, I can’t say that I’d ever considered how far the water flossing world had come. This new device is much quieter and certainly a sleeker design than I remember my old one being. I also noticed my mouth feeling significantly cleaner. When I read the stat below it made me wish I’d stuck with using one all these years.
It is clinically proven up to 50% more effective for improving gum health vs. string floss and proven to remove up to 99.9% of plaque from treated areas in 3 seconds.
If you don’t already have an electric toothbrush, this model of Waterpik actually comes with a toothbrush head attachment. And, in case you were wondering, it also comes with multiple attachments for various family members as well as various tips for braces wearers and such.
(non-existent 2.5) Since my face washing routine doesn’t yet include gadgetry I’ll sadly jump over these. Perhaps one day I’ll share the night-time beauty products I use. I don’t yet have a Clarisonic, which I feel like would round out my routine, but it’s on the list for the future.
3. Nest: Oh man. I might be the most indecisive night-time temperature person ever. We’ve had our Nest Thermostat for several months. I’d say it gets the most use in the evenings up until the insomnia hours. I have it set on an automatic schedule to get cooler around bed-time since all of the articles say that it makes it easier to go to sleep. But generally I move the temperature 3 times between the time I get into bed and when I finally fall asleep. Fortunately, ALL of those up-down-temperature dance moves are done from the lovely app on my phone.
4. Mophie: On most nights I fall asleep to music, an audiobook or a random Youtube video. This would not be a problem except for the fact that a) my iPhone is my alarm in the morning b) it’s not plugged in during this headphone-wearing limbo time. On the evenings I’ve planned ahead I’ll charge my Mophie and then have it ready to refuel my phone while I sleep. If I didn’t think to charge it before bedtime I’ll plug it in to charge over night so that my almost-dead phone can be revived in the morning.
5. Fit Bit: I have the Fit Bit One which not only tracks walking, it also tracks your sleep habits. Or in my case, it creates a night-time moving-arounding graph. With the device clipped to you in some way, you will get a virtual report in the morning of how many times you moved by showing you your “Restless” times and your “Awake” times throughout the night. My husband wakes up for work much earlier than I do, so I usually see quite a bit of “Restless” activity during the time that his alarm in going off and he’s up getting ready for the day.
So, tell me, what’s your geek girl bedtime routine?

The Water Pik looks really helpful! Might have to convince the hubby to try it out!
