8 Delicious White Wines for Every Budget

8 Delicious White Wines for Every Budget

Maybe you’re shopping for a hostess gift, or just looking for a tasty drink to have while vegging on the couch this weekend – either way, white wine is the answer. Whether you’re a novice, or the person who gives impromptu sommelier courses in the wine aisle, we’ve got a list of wines from $5 to $40 to get the ideas (and glasses of chardonnay) flowing.

$5: Aveleda Vinho Verde

Unlike most wines in this price range, the Aveleda Vinho Verde is not a bottle full of liquified sugar that just happens to taste slightly like fermented grapes. The grapes used in this wine are distributed really quickly after harvest, which is what gives it a slightly green tinge (and cheaper price point). The taste is tart and fruity, without being too sweet.

$10: Domaine de Vaufuget Vouvray

Remember that time Leslie Knope said, “I would like a glass of red wine, and I’ll take the cheapest one you have because I can’t tell the difference?” Well, this is a white wine that’s cheap, and great for anyone who can’t tell the difference, because it’s just simple and sweet. It has a very slight honey taste, and is one that most people will like, making it the perfect hostess gift.

$15: Foxglove Central Coast Chardonnay

Foxglove is the affordable label started by the Varner brothers, who are known for high-end Chardonnays – so you know you’re getting an affordable wine that comes from experienced winemakers. This wine has a lot of citrus flavors, and is great for a summer afternoon or warm autumn day.

$20: 2016 Abbazia di Novacella Kerner

If spending $20 on a bottle of wine doesn’t make you feel fancy, having this next little tidbit to share with the dinner hosts will: This Kerner comes from the Swiss Alps, and is made at an abbey that dates back centuries. The taste is fruity but creamy, which means it still tastes great with lighter meats (think chicken or veal).

$25: Dr. Loosen ‘Wehlener Sonnenuhr’ Riesling Kabinett 2016

If you (or the host) are a wine fanatic, this is a great purchase; it’s very complex for the price point, with coriander and spices at the opening, and fruity flavors coming out later. The vineyard is on a steep and rocky part of Germany that’s known for producing some of the best white wines in the world!

$30: 2015 Onward Malvasia Bianca, Suisun Valley, CA

This wine has some intense fruit flavors that are balanced perfectly, so that they aren’t overbearing. It was also created by female winemaker Faith Armstrong Foster, who is kicking butt and taking names – and we’ll drink to that.

$35: Stags’ Leap Winery Viognier

The stone fruit used in this wine makes the Viognier a perfect choice on colder nights, and the crisp citrus is delicious on a summer afternoon. It’s a great year-round wine, and perfect for a larger group of people where tastes will vary.

$40: Dirty & Rowdy Semillon, Yountville 2014

This wine is made from two different types of fermentation (which is still a very unique and somewhat unheard of way to make wine), but the peach and beeswax flavors will convince you that different can be better. This isn’t a great wine option if you’re just starting out, however – the two types of fermentation give this wine a quality that your palate (and wallet) will only really appreciate if you know what you’re looking for.

Now that you know which bottles to look for, get your shopping on, pair your purchase with some snacks, and maybe buy a few bottles and have an at-home wine tasting with friends and family!
