Confessions of a Card-Carrying Cat Parent

This post is part of a social shopper marketing insight campaign with Pollinate Media Group®, Litter Genie® and Fancy Feast®, but all opinions are my own. #pmedia #Catparents http://my-disclosur.es/OBsstV

There’s this stigma that only single ladies can be “cat ladies”. I’m here to dispel this rumor. In fact, I have 5 never-before-seen confessions about just how far my cat lady status goes. I’m a proud kitty parent, and I’m not ashamed to say that my cat gets the very best treatment. In fact, I sometimes tell HIM that he’s acting like a princess.

1. I refrigerate the cat food.

Yep. In addition to serving our cat dry food, his name is Neko* by the way, he also gets the occasional wet food as a treat. I’m pretty sure this falls in the normal animal parent category. But, some how I discovered he liked the wet food better when it was cold. I wish I could remember how I made this discovery. So, yeah… now any time I am near the ‘fridge he think it’s his dinner time. In fact, he responds to the word “hungry”.

He recognizes the box of food that he loves so very much. When we got back from a recent trip to Target (more about that below), I put his new items on the floor. He immediately started purring and rubbing up against the box of Fancy Feast. Fancy Feast does an excellent job of making gourmet meals for our furry friends. He’s a big fan of the seafood varieties, and I like to know that he’s eating high-quality ingredients.

2. The cat decides when it’s time to get off the couch.

Ever had a toddler fall asleep on your lap? Being a good parent, I’m sure you remain in one place as long as humanly possible to keep from waking them. How about if I told you that I do that for my cat?

3. Neko has a personal cat box closet.

This is a fairly new development. But it might have been the tipping point to cat parent crazy. We’ve lived in several apartments since we got Neko (in 2009). Last year when we bought our house, we had a hard time finding a place for his litter box. We all know litter boxes aren’t the most fashionable home decor accessories. For the first few months, his box “lived” in the guest bathroom. This worked out fine when it was just us home. But, as soon as we had visitors we had to re-home his box, which made him even more grumpy about the fact that there were strangers in his house.

Recently we decided that we’d try putting his box in the coat closet. It turned out not to be a bad solution visually. But I’d randomly smell the not-so-lovely litter box odor. We just recently added a Litter Genie to the coat-turned-cat closet. Controlling litter odor is an issue every cat owner has to tackle, scooping clumps of litter into a Litter Genie helps lock away odor. With the litter box being so close to our front door, we scoop the box frequently and now we have a better place to put the waste in between trash days. You can read FAQs and watch Litter Genie’s hilarious commercial on their website.

4. I save empty boxes that I know he likes sitting in.

We order most of our daily use items online. I’ve discovered which box sizes Neko likes to sit in, and I keep them. Several of them. It’s not uncommon for there to be 3+ boxes in our living room just so the cat can hop from one to another.

5. I ordered the most embarrassing cat purchase ever on Amazon.

This requires no words.

*What’s in a cat name? His name, “Neko” means cat in Japanese. When I was in elementary school we got a black cat. As many young children do, I decided to name her “Miss Kitty”. Fast forward several years, we rescued a second black cat. At this stage in life, I was taking Spanish classes. So, I decided to name the second cat Miss Kitty in Spanish – aka “Gatita”. As you can guess, when this furry boy kitty came along I knew he needed to be named “cat”. After some googling, I decided on Japanese “Neko”.

I’ll leave you with this video of Neko playing with his new toy. It’s a mouse-shaped laser pointer that was one of the free cat toy options.

Tell me, what have you done that borders on crazy cat lady?
