Recently I have been working out more frequently and have been experiencing some serious hunger pains on days when I run a longer run. I have been trying to figure out a healthy snack that will keep me from getting hangry, or the hunger monster as my mom calls it. One thing that was difficult is that what I crave after a good workout is not usually that healthy so it seems silly to eat the calories that I just spent time burning. I have been experimenting with post workout smoothies that are still healthy and yummy. This is the best one that I have found it is sweet enough to taste decadent but filled with healthy protein and fruit so in the end it is pretty good for me.

Keeping the Hunger Away with a Chocolate Banana Smoothie: Silk Soymilk

Chocolate Banana Smoothie

  • 1 cup Vanilla Silk Soymilk
  • ½ cup uncooked oatmeal
  • 1 banana
  • 2 tablespoons unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 2 tablespoons sugar (or sweetener or choice)
  • 1 ½ cups ice

Directions

  1. put the oatmeal in the blender and pulse it a few times, it should look like a fine powder at this point (it will make a chunky smoothie if you forget this step).
  2. Toss everything else in the blender and blend it up.
  3. Enjoy!

Note 1: You could add a second fruit instead of the cocoa powder and sugar. Or you could add some peanut butter instead of the banana. The options for these smoothies are endless.

Note 2: I found that if I poured the remaining smoothie in a container and put it in the fridge it was yummy the second day too. I poured it over ice and added a touch more Vanilla Silk Soymilk to thin it just a bit.

I brought one of these with me to work one morning when I had gotten in earlier than normal and knew I would be starving halfway through the morning and this kept the hunger away. I am so excited about a healthy snack that is super easy to make and enjoy. The added protein, 8 grams of plant based protein, from the Silk Soymilk is a bonus! This would be an easy way to have breakfast on the go or an afternoon snack that won’t ruin all of the hard work that I have been doing.
