Do These Match? Geek Girl Fashion Tip + Fall Boots!

Want to know something quirky about my shopping habits? Although I am a badge carrying geek girl, and order most things online, I have a love/hate relationship with buying clothes and shoes online. I LOVE the convenience of online shopping! But, my millennial “instant gratification” gene shows up while waiting for my newly acquired items. I’ve found a fun geeky habit to make the wait more productive.

Since my foot surgery, I’ve been very particular about the quality and comfort of the shoes I wear. Boots have been my go-to for comfort and style! When I was approached about a partnership with SOREL I was so excited. SOREL brings its functionality and heritage of expert craftsmanship to the modern world of fashion, where it is inspiring a new generation of doers, builders, and creators. And though SOREL makes more than just boots, there’s a boot in everything SOREL makes. SOREL combines felt, wool, premium leather, and flawless construction with people who aren’t afraid to get their boots dirty.

Step 1 of this partnership was to pick out some boots that fit my style, function and wardrobe needs.
Step 2: wait for the beautiful boots to arrive. Seems easy enough right?

Here’s where the geekery comes in. The boots I picked out are these fun TORONTO LACE BOOT in the color Major.

This style also comes in black and elk. I love the Major color because it’s a nice tan, neutral color. The problem is major isn’t a common color name. So, I couldn’t exactly go to Pinterest and search for “clothing major color palette”.

Geek Girl Fashion Tip: Color Palette Generator

As soon as my SOREL boots were ordered, I turned to one of my favorite color palette generators. Pictaculous let’s you upload a photo and it will automagically pull the colors out of the image to give you the palette you’re working with! And to take it one step further, it generates 10 different additional color palettes that will complement the colors from your original photo.

Following me? Here’s it is in action:

  1. I grabbed the photo of the boots from the website and then uploaded it on the homepage of Pictaculous
  2. A four color palette is generated for me.

  3. Then, additional color matching suggestions are generated!

How fun is that! You have the option to email the palettes to yourself to keep for later.

Now on to my closet!

I knew I had a few items in the suggested color palette Mint and Raspberry from Kuler. I also LOVED the 5th suggestion from Colourlovers called Sax One Love.

By the time the boots arrived I had already picked out 3 different ensembles that would match! Some variations of brown and tan play nice together and others can seriously clash, so I am so excited to have other color combo ideas to go with my new iconic boots.

Color Palette Style Comes to Life!

For this look I used the Sax One Love palette as inspiration. I started with a black shirt (you may have noticed in the pictures above), but I didn’t love how it was fitting under my jacket so I switched to navy. I think it all came together well! I wore to for a random ice cream outing. I also proceeded to try to get a good picture of ice cream + boots. You decide if the photo is ridiculous.

I wore outfit number two for a night out with my mom. I did a little Instaphotography, but I didn’t realize I didn’t have a full outfit photo until I got home. Fortunately my hubs is an excellent beauographer. Wondering what that is? See here.

We spent more time walking around so I got to see just how comfy these boots are! Comfy and cute = double win.

I can’t wait to try out these boots with more of the color combos!

Have I made you want to go take pictures of all of your odd colored clothing to come up with new matching ideas?

PS: SOREL is having a contest!  Share your back to campus look with #SORELstyleContest on Instagram or Twitter and you could win a trip to New York for teenVOGUE’s Fashion University, or one of ten $250 shopping sprees and SOREL boots.

Blog bloopers: My cat would not stop photobombing the photos we were trying to take so I picked him up and tormented him a bit.

  1. Those boots are amazing. I love your tip for finding the right colors to wear with the shoes!

  2. That is such a great idea, I really want to see if I can work this. I’m so bad at colour coordination. Thanks for sharing :)

  3. That website sounds totally cool! I am definitely that girl that isn’t sure what goes together or what colors compliment best. Thanks for sharing such an informative post!

  4. Your cat is so cute! And I’m definitely going to have to check out that website. It looks so helpful and easy-to-navigate.

  5. I’ll have to check out that website, as I tend to stick to matching the same things all the time.  I LOVE the boots with the bright orange

  6. Girl, these are pretty cool! The idea of generating a
color palette to help you coordinate your outfit it’s genius, I use those
websites mostly for my home decor projects but this is like a hidden feature! I
have absolutely no clue as to how to mix colors so I rely mostly on neutrals
    but this is very useful!
