This Little :: How Name Kitchen Can Resolve Your Domain Anxiety

This is part two of a conversation about website and blog names. Thanks to the clever folks at Name.Kitchen for sponsoring this conversation.

Starting a new business, or launching a blog, can be an exciting endeavor. For some that decision to open virtual doors is a giant leap towards a new direction in life. For others, a new website can just be one additional branch on a growing tree of online identities. I fall into the latter, I buy domain names on a whim. See where I came up with the name Genpink in this post.

With Name.Kitchen, and the “not-com” movement, you are no longer limited by the few open domain names available. Are you a baking guru, or an aspiring boutique owner, how about a chef? There are domain extensions available in so many industries now, including food, fashion, art, parenting, shopping, and more.

One crafty gal and business owner, Mitucha, is able to share her passion for making things with her hands with an adorable website that lives at thislittle.boutique. How’s that for memorable? She’s based in London, so she’d originally considered having her domain end in .london, but she was excited to be able to grab her .boutique extension instead. To her, boutique suggests “something small, everything done under one roof.” Since Mitcha specializes in custom one-of-a-kind designs made from organic cotton and eco-friendly wool she wanted the world to know more than just her location in London. Mitucha says about her business: “ I still love to make things with my hands. Tiny, adorable things for tiny, adorable people. Let’s face it, grown-ups feet are far from cute. But not a baby’s.”

I love this line in her bio “Treat those little feet you just wish you could eat!”. I think it’s great that although she first started with only booties, her name can grow with her. If I were to give only one bit of blogging advice, I’d certainly say pick something that you think will be able to expand as your life, or service offerings do.

Name.Kitchen has all sorts of great resources to help you with the process. There’s an excellent video series, called “I am”, that showcase businesses innovation and naming creativity. There’s also an entire site, cleverly named “Kitchen” (powered by Donuts) that helps you cook up your perfect identity. You can browse through pages of options that will likely help you narrow down your next web-project.
